Strategic Forum

Diabetes and Obesity

Background

Obesity, a chronic inflammatory disease represented by multifactorial metabolic dysfunctions, is a significant global health threat for adults and children. In patients with T2D, overweight and obese BMI ranges are associated with increased risk of T2D-related complications. In patients with T1D, the mounting epidemiological data now establishes the connection between T1D and the subsequent development of obesity, or vice versa. Obesity and diabetes are not isolated – they are highly interlinked with each other, hence the healthcare system changes necessary to address existing problems are overlapping.

Objectives & Directions for Solutions

This strategic forum will seek to unite the diabetes community behind a diabetes/obesity narrative in order to drive policy change which will enable timely diagnosis and effective management in order to reduce the risk of costly complications, improve the quality of life and will lead to downstream benefits across multiple NCDs.

The recommendations are currently in development.
