Disease Modifying Therapies

Background

As scientific understanding of diabetes continues to evolve, disease modifying treatments - which affect the underlying pathophysiology - have the potential to prevent, delay, slow or reverse the progression of diabetes. However, realising the potential of these treatments requires defining the diabetes community’s aspiration for the future of diabetes treatment and care, and identifying the policy barriers which will limit their uptake to ensure the continued unmet needs facing diabetes patients are recognised and prioritised by policymakers.

Objectives & Directions for Solutions

This strategic forum seeks to unite the diabetes community behind a shared vision for the future of treatment and care in order to drive policy change which will enable the effective uptake of these treatments over the coming years.

Disease Modifying Therapies for Type 1 Diabetes

The disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) aim to prevent, delay, or slow progression of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) by modulating the immune response and bring us closer to a future where T1D is not only treatable, but potentially preventable. This policy paper outlines key steps to ensure that EU healthcare systems are prepared to safely and equitably deliver DMTs for T1D.
